Transforming Lancaster Travel - Link Road consultation

We asked for views on the South Lancaster to M6 Road Scheme. The consultation has now closed.

Comments and responses that have been received will be considered and will help to finalise the planning application which will be submitted in late summer. A consultation report will also be prepared and submitted with the application.

We want to help Lancaster district to grow, help people to get around and promote sustainable travel options.

So we’re working with Lancaster City Council and other partners to deliver major transport improvements, especially in and around the city centre.

The aim of the South Lancaster to M6 Road Scheme is to open up the development of the Garden Village site and enabling more sustainable transport use.

As well as helping Lancaster's economy to continue to grow, it will also help to reduce congestion in some areas of the city centre and Galgate.

About the plans

The planning application for the scheme will be accompanied by an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), which considers the environmental impacts of the scheme on the surrounding area.

Site plan

This is the main overall plan for the scheme, showing the route of the road in the context of the M6, West Coast Mainline, surrounding local roads and other relevant infrastructure.

Construction information

This plan shows where the main compounds, welfare, material and plant storage and structure laydown areas could be based during the construction period. This is where there would likely to be the most activity on a day-to-day basis as contractors use these areas to gather supplies and take breaks.

Public Rights of Way information

Some Public Rights of Way will be directly impacted by the Scheme on a temporary or permanent basis. These documents show which routes will be affected and the proposed diversions:

Park and Ride information

The proposed park and ride facility is located to the south of Hazelrigg Lane. People would be able to park here and then travel into Lancaster city centre by bus.

Structures information

There are several proposed structures required for this Scheme. The map shows where each structure would be in the context of the overall layout.

Details of the proposed design of most structures are shown below.

Four design options are proposed for the Burrow Heights Canal Bridge, due to the sensitive setting of this structure as part of a Biological Heritage Site:

Lighting information

A lighting scheme has been prepared to show the locations of the lighting along the Scheme and indications of the type of lighting that would be installed.

Environmental masterplan information

The proposed planting can be seen on the Environmental Masterplan, which also shows the locations of footpaths/cycleways throughout the Scheme, as well as the layout of the junctions in more detail.

Cross sections give an impression of the landscape at specific points to how the planting could look one year after the Scheme opens, and 15 years after the opening.

Photomontages of three bridges give an artist's impression of the proposed bridges and planting one year after the Scheme opens and 15 years after the opening.

Supplementary information

An overview of the environmental considerations is available in the Non-Technical Summary. This document provides some additional details about the Scheme based on information available to date.

A glossary of terms is also included for any technical terms that require further explanation.
