To understand the purpose of science assessment – formative and summative.
To consider current best practice and to explore tools to support in-school moderation of standards.
To provide guidance and support to help develop the accuracy of teacher judgements.
To explore ways of continuing to improve the quality of teaching and learning in Science through effective assessment strategies.

Science subject leaders and the teachers in their schools need to develop their confidence and expertise at making judgements for science against the age related expectations. This can be done with in-school moderation meetings and professional dialogue using the expectations set out in the NC2014, the statutory Teacher Assessment Frameworks, exemplification material for science and samples of work from pupils in each age phase. This session will develop the skills of subject leaders on how to manage this in their setting.

There will be an opportunity to explore free national resources (from PLAN Assessment and TAPS) to support day to day assessment and develop good practice.

During the session, participants will have the opportunity to discuss 'good quality evidence of learning' and to share examples from their own school alongside national exemplification. To gain the most from this session, please bring the work from one unit of science for one child who is considered to be working at ARE along with a charged laptop. This course is focused mainly around making judgements against ARE and summative assessment and it would fit well alongside the 'Sticky Learning in Primary Science' course which considers a wealth of strategies and ideas to support AfL and day to day assessment in the classroom.
