Course Aims
• To outline the requirements for written calculation within the National Curriculum.
• To explore documents to support the progression towards written methods of calculation.
• To consider the use of concrete apparatus, models and images in developing children’s understanding of written calculation.
• To provide practical ideas to support with teaching, practising and applying written calculation skills.

It is essential that children should develop an understanding of written calculations if they are to be able to use and apply these calculations in problem solving. This course will look at the progression through written addition, subtraction, multiplication and division from Year 1 to Year 6. Particular focus will be given to the use of concrete and pictorial representations.
