The Primary English and Literacy Team at Lancashire Professional Development Service (LPDS) have developed a NEW planning programme using the Letters and Sounds approach titled Red Rose Letters and Sounds Phase 1.

This planning programme has been developed, continuously evaluated and refined with twenty schools and settings in 2022-2023, using the expertise of effective classroom practitioners and early literacy specialists at LPDS. Red Rose Letters and Sounds Phase 1 is a rigorous planning programme designed for teaching the continuum of phonological awareness throughout Aspects 1 – 6 with a focus on the phonemic awareness stage of oral blending and segmenting within Aspect 7. This practical full day course is suitable for Nursery and Reception practitioners. It will explore explicit teaching and learning approaches underpinned by a carefully considered progression and planning materials. This will pave the way with excellent foundations for children to become enthusiastic readers and writers. This course also provides guidance to ensure a smooth transition into Phase 2 or equivalent, where children learn Grapheme Phoneme Correspondences.

Participants will leave with a comprehensive understanding of planning, teaching and assessing using the Red Rose Letters and Sounds Phase 1 programme, a firm understanding of the pedagogy, and will be motivated by the belief that teaching with this programme will improve outcomes for children.

The Red Rose Letters and Sound Planning Phase 1 Programme is available to purchase from LPDS.
Please note - this planning programme and training is suitable for any setting prior to starting any systematic, synthetic phonics programme which begins at Phase 2 or equivalent.
