Population history 1891-2021

The following table lists the population figures for the Lancashire-14 area from 1891 to 2021. Over the 130 year period, the population increased by over 640,000 or 72.1%.

The table emphasises the very sharp differentials between population changes over various time periods. The tremendous growth of over 135,000 between 1891 and 1901 was far greater than the second and third largest 10-year increases of over 80,000 between 1901 and 1911 and between 1961 and 1971. In contrast, the 18-year period from 1921 to 1939 saw a combined growth figure of just 10,166, whilst a small reduction occurred between 1981 and 1991. The figures between 1991 and 2011 showed modest growth of 0.3% per annum for both 10-year periods. In the latest inter-censal period the fourth largest increase in the historical series occurred.
