Area and population density

The Lancashire-12 area in 2024 recorded a population density of 447 people per square kilometre, while the figure for the Lancashire-14 area was higher at 522.

The Lancashire-12 figure (447) was lower than the England (450) and North West (548) figures but in excess of the England and Wales average of 409. The Lancashire-14 population density figure of 522 per square kilometre was greater than the England figure but lower than the North West average.

The highly urbanised authority of Blackpool had by far the highest population density in the Lancashire-14 area with 4,135 people per square kilometre. Blackburn with Darwen (1,186), Hyndburn (1,179), Preston (1,145) and South Ribble (1,026) were the other four Lancashire-14 authorities with population densities in excess of 1,000. Ribble Valley, with 113 people per square kilometre, was by far the least densely populated authority in the Lancashire-14 area.
