Lancashire Quality Award – Early Reading

This award will support practitioners to fully consider the key skills required for learning and developing within the reading aspect.

Enjoying books and reading stories from a very early age is crucial in the development of children. It helps with their ability to understand words, use their imagination and develop their speech, as well as being something they really enjoy.

The Lancashire Quality Award in Early Reading encapsulates reading as an integral element of the early years curriculum and builds on children’s enjoyment of story and develops practitioner’s subject knowledge to support effective teaching of reading in the early years.

The award is embedded within everyday routines and children’s play, supporting practitioners to be confident in their subject knowledge and therefore better at recognising learning opportunities in children’s play.

Consideration is given to a set of module standards and how to further improve and develop practice in these areas:

  1. Learning environments are reading rich and support children’s emergent reading development
  2. Practitioners understand, value and utilise early reading opportunities available during every day routines
  3. Practitioners have a secure knowledge of early reading development and how to support this
  4. Practitioners support children to develop their early reading skills through a wide range of engaging and fun activities
  5. Phonics is taught daily and discretely, planned and delivered in interactive, stimulating and multi-sensory ways that engage children
  6. An effective planning observation and assessment cycle identifies children’s individual reading needs, interests and abilities and supports progress in reading
  7. Reading routines match the developmental needs of the children and provide sufficient opportunities for shared and independent reading
  8. Parents are informed and knowledgeable about the setting’s approach to early reading and the teaching of phonics and value their children’s early reading development at home and in the setting
  9. The importance of early reading and the place of phonics within the teaching of reading is understood and prioritised
