Nelson - Safer, greener, healthier streets project
We will be improving local streets at Walverden Primary School and Marsden Community Primary School, and in Netherfield Road by Duerden Street.
This involves making streets around these schools one way, providing new wider pavements, and introducing walking safety improvement measures. We're raising the road to meet the kerb level (known as a raised table), narrowing the road with raised tables and tactile paving in the one-way streets.
This will improve overall road safety, prioritise pedestrians, reduce speeds and manage traffic flows.
A new crossing will be provided on Netherfield Road by Duerden Street. And to improve connections to the town centre, the zebra crossing will be moved towards Broad Street by the Station Hotel. Trees and shrubs will be planted where pavements have been widened.
Trees and shrubs will also be planted at the existing green space between Railway Street and Brunswick Street.
The green space near Walverden Primary school will be redesigned, with a new pavement and new seating.
The streets by Walverden Primary School will be altered to improve safety.
Following feedback from local residents, we have changed the final plan reversing the direction of one-way traffic on Holly Street.
We will improve the existing raised table at the Athol Street/Temple Street junction. Bracewell Street will be made one way to improve safety at the school entrance.
Following local feedback, we reversed the proposed routing of the one-way system around Marsden Community Primary School. We will keep Bradshaw Street as one way from Percy Street to Beaufort Street.

Linking to local plans - Accessible Nelson
A series of improvement known as Accessible Nelson are being delivered in the town.
The Levelling Up East Lancashire ActiveAVTC project is one of the seven projects contributing to these plans.
