Colne - Safer, greener, healthier streets project

We're improving local streets in the area of Albert Road, Guysyke, Rigby Street and Lord Street; including the streets around Lord Street Primary School.

This includes new wider pavements and safety improvement measures for pedestrians, raising the road to meet the kerb level (known as a raised table) with tactile paving at junctions. This will help to improve overall road safety, prioritise pedestrians, manage traffic flows and reduce speeds.  

The junction by the leisure centre at Bridge Street and Guysyke will be redesigned to improve visibility, reduce traffic speeds, and improve the walking route between the town centre and the railway station. We will make minor adjustments to the existing signalised crossing and bus stops on Albert Road.  

Signal crossing facilities will be added to the Albert Road / Lord Street / Sutherland Street junction to improve pedestrian safety and the walking route to the town centre and Lord Street Primary School.  

New crossing facilities will be added to the Lord Street / Rigby Street / North Valley Road junction outside the school, helping parents and children walking to school.

We're improving the school’s access to the woodland area they use for their outdoor classes.

Forthergill Street will be one way (northbound) and the pavements next to the school will be widened, with tree planting to make this area less car dominated, safer and better for pedestrians.  

Following residents' concerns, we have changed the proposals for the Queen Street / Rigby Street junction area to remove the double yellow lines and removed the tree planting.

We have made Rigby Street one-way to introduce parking bays. The junction priority will change so that Queen Street traffic has to give way, improve safety and reduce traffic speeds.
