Colne Road, Burnley

This project on Colne Road aims to improve pedestrian movement, access for the communities either side of the road, and help to address the issues of speeding motorists.

In direct response to stakeholders' concerns, we will be installing speed cameras along Colne Road.

Public space improvements will be focused on the main shopping areas.

The works will involve a series of interventions along the length of Colne Road, between the Hebrew Road junction at the southern end and the Casterton Road junction at the northern end.

Developing and updating the plans

During our first workshop, road safety on Colne Road was identified as the main priority for local residents.

As a result of the feedback and concerns raised, two new projects were added:

  • Exploring the potential to introduce speed cameras to address concerns around speeding and anti-social driving.

  • Developing a long-term masterplan for the area to address concerns and support further improvements.

Our plans

At the Colne Road/Hebrew Road junction, there will be new pedestrian crossing facilities. The pavement will be widened to reduce the crossing width across Hebrew Road and to slow vehicles turning.

On Colne Road, to the south of St Andrew with St Margaret and St James Church, we will reduce the wide roads to create more space for parking, new pedestrian crossings and pavement resurfaces to improve the appearance of the public space.

Dropped kerbs at Ribblesdale Street, Bar Street, Cobden Street, and Phesantford Street will improve access for pedestrians. A small area of new parking is proposed.

At Murray Street/Brennard Street junction, there will be a new pedestrian crossing, and the road will be narrowed at the junctions.

A new pedestrian crossing is also proposed at Disraeli Street by the Queensgate Islamic Centre.

At the entrance to the bus depot, we will mark out a pedestrian route while still allowing buses into the depot.  A new pedestrian crossing over Colne Road at Peart Street will improve links to the hospital.

At the Colne Road/Casterton Street junction, we will improve the pedestrian crossings.
