Inclusion and Engagement Support Team: EHCP

We support children and young people from reception to post 16 with an EHCP who are at risk of suspension or exclusion.

We provide support to both children and young people and the staff in their setting to secure positive experiences and outcomes and ensure their inclusion in a mainstream setting.

This is a free service for all settings via referral directly from school only, along with parental consent.

Stages following referral

Support is bespoke to reflect the schools and pupils needs.

Up to 1 hour MS Teams consultation with a member of the senior leadership team (SLT) or SENDCO.

You will discuss the needs of the child or young person in more detail. 

Please be prepared during this consultation to have the relevant details included in your referral.

Signposting to relevant services and initial strategies will be given.

An inclusion teacher will visit the school setting and carry out an observation. This may also involve discussion/feedback with SENDCO/class teacher. A written report with strategies for schools and signposting to external support as appropriate.

The school visit with inclusion teacher or learning mentor may include:

  • observation of the child or young person
  • introducing the learning mentor to the child or young person
  • meeting with support staff/class teacher/SENDCO/SLT
  • discussion around SEND provision, short term interventions to be delivered by IEST

Learning mentor to work directly with the child or young person and staff using interventions and supportive strategies. Ongoing summaries and next steps in line with inclusion teacher report. Review after six visits with inclusion teacher.

Inclusion teachers/learning mentor may attend meetings with parents/professionals.

Inclusion teachers

Following a referral, the inclusion teachers will triage the request and contact the school with next steps.

The inclusion teacher can provide:

  • online consultation advice based upon referral information
  • school observations and visits
  • strategy based written reports
  • signposting to resources and external support
  • support at multi agency meetings
  • ongoing email support

Learning mentors

The role of the learning mentor is to provide support and modelling to school staff over a series of visits.

They can provide in the moment coaching to staff along with direct work with children and young people.

Ongoing summaries of visits and next steps for schools will be provided following each visit.

Schools should complete the referral form and parental consent form and email to iest@Lancashire.gov.uk.

The parental consent form must be signed (wet signature).
