Directions

If your school wishes to send a child to an alternative provider (college, another school, PRU etc.) for the purpose of improving his/her behaviour, a form called a Direction must be used to inform all parties. Provision can be made up of more than one alternative provider and all must be listed. Schools should ensure any such provision is equal in time to that of a 'normal' school week entitlement of 10 sessions and 25 hours, it should provide an appropriate curriculum and should be kept under regular review.

The document for governing bodies is statutory guidance.

The use of reasonable force

The Governments expert adviser on behaviour, Charlie Taylor, has produced a checklist on the basics of classroom management. Teachers can use it to develop between five and ten essential actions to encourage good behaviour in students.

The checklist follows Charlie's recent summit, where outstanding headteachers discussed their views on the key principles for improving behaviour. The document serves as a reminder to teachers to get the basics right.
