Course Aims
• To consider progression in mental calculations for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
• To identify the key skills that are necessary to support mental calculations.
• To provide practical ideas to support with the development of mental calculations in the classroom.
• To consider appropriate methods of recording mental calculations.

Children should be able to select an appropriate method for a given calculation. Mental calculations are often the most appropriate methods to use because they can be more efficient than written calculations. Mental calculations also encourage children to use key skills such as counting, partitioning, number bonds, etc. This course will look at the progression through mental addition, subtraction, multiplication and division from Year 1 to Year 6 and the key skills needed to support the calculations.
