To identify and discuss the literacy and reading skills required to be a successful mathematician
To consider strategies for developing student knowledge and use of mathematical vocabulary, conventions and notation
To consider strategies to develop mathematical reading and comprehension skills

This course is aimed at secondary mathematics teachers and may also be appropriate for HLTAs and teachers from other specialisms working in mathematics departments.

Reading mathematics rarely involves reading a novel or lengthy worded descriptions or instructions. Much of the reading carried out by successful mathematicians involves reading and understanding mathematical words, notation and conventions, an ability to comprehend a scenario or problem and an ability to identify the mathematics involved in that scenario.
