• To consider the skills and strategies needed to ensure students remember mathematical knowledge (declarative, procedural and conditional) and make conceptual links
• To use research and learning science to develop strategies to improve student recall and retention
• To consider how these strategies can be altered and developed for students of different mathematical abilities
• To consider the role of improving fluency in closing gaps in learning
As one element of the Education Inspection Framework, inspectors will consider what steps the school has taken to ensure that pupils understand and remember the mathematical knowledge, concepts and procedures, they are learning, including knowledge of efficient algorithms, appropriate for their starting points, and which ensure readiness for the next stage, whether that is the next lesson, unit of work, year or key stage, and including post-16 mathematics.
The Ofsted Research Review into good quality mathematics education highlights some features around recall and retention which may contribute to better outcomes for students.
This course will look at methods and strategies to develop these skills for students of varying ability.
