• To identify the key skills in mathematics in Year 2.
• To explore effective ways of teaching these skills to ensure understanding and develop automaticity and fluency.
• To consider how the key skills impact on other aspects of the mathematics curriculum within Year 2 and beyond.

Ofsted state that it is important for children to have sufficient understanding of, and unconscious competence in, prerequisite mathematical knowledge, concepts and procedures that are necessary to succeed in the specific tasks set. The key skills in each year group form the building blocks on which the bulk of the mathematics curriculum sits. Where children have limited success in maths, it is often because their knowledge of these skills is less well developed, which in turn places a greater cognitive demand on their working memory. This half day course identifies the skills which children in Year 2 need to support them in achieving year group expectations and how these can be effectively taught for maximum impact on learning.
