To explore what particular issues struggling readers can have with reading
To explore how struggling readers can be identified and best supported to improve their decoding and fluency issues, and specifically how the explicit teaching of phonics can support this
To explore how an effective whole-school reading strategy that prioritises the needs of struggling readers can be developed, implemented and sustained over time
As a 'master skill', ensuring that across the curriculum students are reading in a meaningful way with fluency and accuracy is vital in terms of reducing the gap between the disadvantaged and advantaged in life. Certainly, the ability to read well is a vital component in successful student outcomes in all GCSE examinations, particularly if students are to read well to learn and build their subject specific knowledge.
Yet, if students have not mastered the fundamentals of reading, the ability to decode and the ability to do so fluently with automaticity, students will struggle to comprehend the texts they are asked to read.
This course is intended for teachers responsible for leading reading across the curriculum to support the development of a rigorous reading strategy in secondary schools that prioritises the needs of readers who struggle to decode and who struggle with fluent reading. The course will particularly focus on what place the explicit teaching of phonics has in our secondary schools.
