Method of travel to work

Introduction

This article uses statistics that were published as part of the Phase 1 - Census 2021 topic summaries. These are estimates based on information submitted by householders and other respondents on Census Day 2021, which was on 21st March.

Motorised forms of transport, usually car or vans, are by far the most frequently used means of travel to work. Of all usual residents aged 16 and over and in employment, the Lancashire-12 area recorded an average of 54.6% who commuted by driving a car or a van to work. A further 4.9% were car/van passengers.

Around 25% of the usual residents in the Lancashire-12 area work at or mainly from home. This was around 3.75 times the proportion in 2011, partly because the Covid-19 lockdown had not been completely lifted when the Census took place and also because of technological changes over the intervening period that made the home into a viable workplace for many former office jobs.

Public transport travel modes were the normal means of travel to work for just 3.6% employed usual residents in Lancashire-14. This was significantly lower than the England equivalent of 8.2%, or North West at 6.0%.

Commuting by bicycle or on-foot accounted for 1.4% in the Lancashire-14 area, which was lower than the England average of 2.1%.
