- (a) Children in public care and previously looked after children. This includes children who appear admission to have been in state care outside of England and ceased to be in state care as a result of being adopted.
(b) Children with special medical or social circumstances affecting the child and/or the family where these needs can only be met at this school. - Children with a parent or guardian worshipping in a Church in membership of Churches Together in England or the Evangelical Alliance to a maximum of 23 (75%).
- Children who have a sibling attending the school on the date of application and on the date of admission.
- Children from farms and hamlets in the outlying rural areas due east of the school falling within the Southfield and Marsden Wards of Nelson, where St John’s School is the nearest or most accessible school from their home by road. Children may live a greater distance than children in category 5 but pass no other schools between their home and St John's by road. A map showing the boundaries is available in school.

Where there are more applicants for the available places within a category, then the distance between the Ordnance Survey address points for the school and the home measured in a straight line will be used as the final determining factor, nearer addresses having priority over more distant ones.
