Local government employees
The Local Government Association (LGA) publishes quarterly statistics on the number of local government employees in authorities across the country. The figures are available for all employees, full-time equivalents, by gender, and full- and part-time employees. Temporary and permanent employee results are also available.
The latest figures are for quarter two (April to June) of 2025.
Key figures
- There were 46,420 employees in the 15 local authorities in Lancashire-14.
- The county council employed 33,575 people, or 72.3% of the total.
- Blackburn with Darwen (4,641) and Blackpool (3,360) unitary authorities were 17.2% of the total.
- The 12 local authorities in the county council area employed 4,844 people (10.4% of the total), ranging from 908 in Lancaster City Council to 168 in Rossendale Borough Council.
- There were 34,594 full-time equivalents (FTEs) for all 15 Lancashire authorities.
- Overall, women accounted for 77.1% of the total employee headcount in the 15 authorities.
