Campaigns and events

The road safety team will send out a termly newsletter via the School portal that can be shared with staff. Every year there are numerous campaigns that have a road safety theme or element. In addition to this we encourage schools to tackle local issues by using their school council to advocate for road safety and act as Junior road safety Ambassadors, and organise termly events and competitions with a road safety theme, these can be done in conjunction with national campaigns.

Campaigns and events

Brake, the national road safety charity, campaign for safe and healthy mobility for all and to stop road deaths and injuries.

Every year, they hold the Brake Kids Walk where thousands of primary school children participate to learn important road safety messages.

Road Safety Week is organised by the national road safety charity Brake and involves a variety of activities to engage schools, organisations and communities to promote road safety.

Participating in Road Safety Week 2025 is a great way to promote road safety.

During the annual Road Safety Week, we focus on the marvellous work done across the county in our schools. This video clip from 2024 highlights the work done by our fabulous School Crossing Patrols: Road Safety Week

Visit the Brake website where you can access and request resources and sign up for the next campaign.

Upper primary resources for road safety week

The resources are again aimed at helping children to learn about and celebrate their road safety heroes.

There are three lesson plans (Factsheet for educators, posters, and pupil worksheets) and a Powerpoint presentation for assembly.

The Think! Safe Adventures campaign is aimed at the parents of pupils in KS2 and focuses on the top three risky behaviours.

Nationally the number of child pedestrian casualties doubles between the ages of nine and 11, with incidents more likely to happen during drop-off and pick up times.

Parents are encouraged to have practice journeys and to model best practice and compliment the existing Green Cross Code (Stop, Look, Listen, Think) with the positive message "Eyes up, Slow Down, Cross Safely."

‘EYES UP’ prompts children to put their phone away, look out for their friends and not distract them.

‘SLOW DOWN’ advises children to take care and don’t run across the road when traffic is coming, even if you think there is time.

‘CROSS SAFELY’ reminds children to always find a safe place to cross, use a pedestrian crossing if there is one and choose a place where you can see clearly in all directions.
