Moving and Assisting People Training - OP0046

Who is this course for?

All new and existing non-certificated staff at all levels who work in Older People Services residential homes.

Aims

This training is hosted via a webinar session and assessed as competent by the learners nominated in house service assessor for the practical elements of the course.
The course is designed to improve the quality of care practice and minimise the risk of pain and injury to residents and staff by raising the overall level of back care awareness.
It will also provide learners with a video demonstration instruction in safe moving and handling practice, including the use of various pieces of equipment.

Objectives

By the end of the course the learner will be able to:

• Explain the principles of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and the employer/employee responsibilities in law.
• Recognise stressful and stress free movements and postures when moving and handling, standing, bending, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, carrying, reaching, and lying.
• Describe the anatomy of the spine in relation to movement and posture.
• Explain the main causes of back pain to include wear and tear, traumatic injury and poor posture.
• Able to apply a problem solving approach to moving and handling, selecting and applying appropriate strategies.
• Assess the physical work environment and the procedures in operation and their effect on moving and handling situations.
• Demonstrate competency for safe and appropriate use of various pieces of equipment including the hoist, patient handling sling, the banana board, and turntable and slide sheets, this objective will be assessed in their own workplace.

NB: Certificates of completion will be provided to learners once a successful competency has been achieved via a work based assessment of practical elements as mentioned in objective 7 above
