Autism level 3 – specialist work with autistic adults - SC158

Who is this course for?

Learning Disability and Autism Specialist Teams only, who have already attended the Autism level 2 course and completed the Autism ELearning. Social Workers,Team Managers and Social Care Support Officers currently in those teams.
APPLICATIONS FROM STUDENT SOCIAL WORKERS WILL ONLY BE ACCEPTED IF RECEIVED WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF THE COURSE DATE. ANY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED BEFORE THIS WILL BE DELETED FROM THE SYSTEM.

Aims

To provide practitioners with advanced communication skills for working with Autistic adults in ongoing relationships.

  • To develop understanding of sensory needs and other factors that may underlie behaviour which challenges.
  • To develop enhanced awareness of autism specific issues in Care Planning (including transitions), Capacity Assessment and Risk Management.
  • To provide practitioners with the knowledge to evaluate and recognise quality in potential services for Autistic adults.

Objectives

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • (includes coverage of SfC Autism Skills and Knowledge list intermediate criteria and DoH CPD Curriculum plus applied MCA, Care Act and Safeguarding knowledge.):
  • Develop knowledge of current thinking, policy and evidence-based support for Autistic adults (DoH CPD Curriculum)
  • Develop practical communication strategies when supporting an autistic person. Includes both highly verbal and less verbal clients, those with and without perceived learning disabilities. Focus is on in depth communication strategies for ongoing relationships (SfC Autism Skills and Knowledge list intermediate criteria)
  • Develop enhanced awareness of autism specific issues in capacity assessment and best interests decision making in the context of the Mental Capacity Act and develop skills in supporting decision making (Mental Capacity Act)
  • Develop knowledge of sensory needs and differences of Autistic people, be able to make appropriate adjustments and recognise the role of sensory issues in distress and behaviour which may challenge (SfC Autism Skills and Knowledge list intermediate and specialist criteria)
  • Develop understanding of how autistic people may experience change and transitions, recognise the role of uncertainty and lack of structure in distress and behaviour which may challenge and effective approaches to providing support with change, transitions and significant life events (DoH CPD Curriculum, SfC Autism Skills and Knowledge Intermediate level)
  • Develop understanding of the barriers autistic people may experience in the community and effective approaches to supporting life skills including independence, social skills and access to employment (SfC Autism Skills and Knowledge Intermediate level, DoH CPD Curriculum)
  • Be able to support autistic clients to manage stress and anxiety (SfC Autism Skills and Knowledge Intermediate level)
  • Be able to support family and friends and recognise their expertise in relation to autistic clients whilst being aware of conflict of interest
