This course is for all staff within children's mainstream residential services, outreach workers and foster carers.

Aims

The aim is for participants to be able to recognise the signs and symptoms of substance and alcohol abuse and know where to go for further help

Objectives

 

 

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Recognise the different types of drugs and their effects
  • Outline the classification of drugs and the Misuse of drugs act 1971
  • Have knowledge of alcohol abuse and its effect
  • Describe reasons why children and young people may engage with drugs or alcohol
  • Recognise additional risk factors linked to children and young people who may be more vulnerable
  • Explain the role of confidentiality
  • Explain legal implications
  • Outline how to support children and young people with drug or alcohol issues
  • Outline where to go for further support
