Becoming a childminder

3. Childminding pre-registration workshops

The childminding pre-registration workshops will give you the underpinning knowledge you will need to register as a childminder. The 12-hour course usually runs over 4 workshops either in the day or evening and is £145.

Topics covered include:

  • Making your home safe
  • Writing policies
  • Managing behaviour
  • Observing children
  • Giving medication
  • Supporting children's learning
  • Risk assessment
  • Planning activities
  • Working with parents

The workshops are led by qualified staff who have many years’ experience in early years including working as inspectors for Ofsted. They will use their expertise to help you develop your knowledge, skills and confidence.

There are no tests or exams, but you are expected to join in with the discussions and activities and make the most of your time during the sessions.

Once you have completed your workshops one of the tutors will visit you in your home (Lancashire residents only) to provide individual advice and help you to prepare for your Ofsted registration visit. This one-to-one time will help ensure you are ready to become a successful childminder.

If you don’t live within the Lancashire County Council area, then you are still welcome to access our pre-registration workshops but please discuss this with us when you book your place on the briefing session.
