Course Aims:
- Consider how to develop oracy skills in science and how this can support learning and writing in this subject.
- Explore progression in oracy skills.
- Provide opportunities for developing exploratory talk, critical thinking, debate and drama in science.
- Discuss books that can be used to support science topics in EYFS-KS2 and how these can be used to develop reading skills.
This course builds on the strategies explored in the 'Sticky Learning in Primary Science' course which supports children in articulating their ideas to help develop genuine understanding of the concepts and phenomena being taught. This half day course will be delivered with expertise from the Primary Science Team, as well as the English Team, to combine strategies and advice to build further opportunities for speaking, listening and communication to support writing in science.
‘Although talk is a universal feature of classroom life, talk of the quality required [for dialogic teaching] is not universal. Making it happen requires skill and training.’ Professor Robin Alexander, written evidence to the Commission on the Future of Oracy Education in England, Oct24.
The course will consider the use of ‘exploratory talk’; using spoken word to enable pupils to discuss, reason and argue; developing productive dialogue and critical thinking and the use of debate and drama to support writing in science.
