This course provides secondary English teachers with a rich and practical exploration of the pedagogical approaches that have the greatest impact on students’ learning relevant to the subject. Grounded in evidence-informed practice, it focuses on the high‑leverage strategies that enable all learners—including those with barriers to learning—to access, engage with and excel in English.
The course explores what effective curriculum implementation looks like in practice. Delegates will examine key elements of pedagogy in English that builds student success, independence and mastery. This includes pedagogy to support oracy, questioning, metacognition, vocabulary instruction, modelling and reading strategies before, during and after encountering a text. The course also emphasises the role of formative assessment in diagnosing gaps, checking for fluency, and shaping responsive teaching.
Through a blend of practical examples, analogies, models and subject‑specific scenarios, delegates will leave with the tools to strengthen effective approaches within their departments and classrooms, so every student they teach can benefit from excellent teaching and learning.
