  • Steven Kenyon* (Teaching and Learning Consultant - Primary History)

This course will give delegates guidance on developing secure knowledge within the primary history curriculum. Strategies taught during this session support secure retention of key content and terms that can then be unlocked for later rapid recognition within future learning.

We will consider how to:
• plan and sequence the curriculum coherently so that pupils build knowledge and skills sequentially and cumulatively
• make pedagogical choices that emphasise the most important content and concepts in the school’s curriculum, which can then be regularly revisited
• ensure that all teachers have a strong, shared understanding of the school’s curriculum and its approach to teaching and assessment
• choose activities that emphasise and revisit important content and concepts to make sure that all pupils learn and remember them
• ensure that new information is taught within a context that makes this meaningful for pupils
• use narratives and stories as a highly effective way of teaching new content in history
• help pupils to understand bigger ideas and underlying concepts as they reoccur in new contexts
• connect the material learned into broader frameworks and narratives

These approaches will be exemplified through the use of high-quality exemplar teaching materials and real-life examples from local primary schools. Delegates will be equipped with a comprehensive download of useful materials and resources to take back to school for use in staff training and for practical application within the classroom.
