This course will give delegates guidance on designing an inclusive history curriculum that supports all children’s progress and enables pupils with SEND to learn effectively and achieve well. It will focus on supporting children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) so that they are able to learn the same high-quality curriculum as their peers.
We will consider inclusive approaches that are effective for all learners including:
• engaging pupils through well-planned playful multi-sensory collaborative learning
• encouraging independence and confidence through adapted tasks that avoid overloading learners’ working memories.
• learning in small steps that build upon prior knowledge
• sequencing learning, so that each new idea makes logical sense, based on what learners already know
• providing alternatives to traditional written recording (e.g. scribing oral responses, drawing, voice recording and digital tools)
• using physical resources and relatable real-life examples to help abstract concepts become more familiar
• using word banks and visual aids for pupils with literacy or communication difficulties
• adapting and selecting historical sources for readability
These approaches will be exemplified through the use of high-quality exemplar teaching materials, pupil case studies and real-life examples from local primary schools. Delegates will be equipped with a comprehensive download of useful materials and resources to take back to school for use in staff training and for practical application within the classroom.
