- To develop an understanding of the purpose and principles of effective regulation and nurture spaces, and how they support emotional safety, co regulation and reduced escalation for pupils.
- To explore how sensory needs, environmental factors and predictable routines can be built into space design to help pupils regain regulation and readiness for learning.
- To provide practical guidance on creating, organising and managing regulation/nurture areas so they are purposeful, trauma informed and aligned with whole school behaviour systems.
- To equip staff with strategies for supporting pupils before, during and after use of these spaces, ensuring consistency, relational connection and smooth reintegration back into the classroom.
This session guides staff through the design and purpose of regulation and nurture spaces that promote emotional safety, co regulation and calm within school. Rooted in relational and proactive practice, the course explores how thoughtfully designed environments can reduce escalation, meet sensory and emotional needs, and help pupils return to learning ready, regulated and connected.
The training aligns directly with the new Schools White Paper, which emphasises greater inclusion in mainstream settings, early identification of need, and high quality adaptive support for all pupils. The paper highlights the shift towards universal and targeted provision within schools and the expectation that settings create calm, supportive environments capable of meeting a wider range of needs.
Through practical guidance, templates and real life examples, staff will leave equipped to design and implement regulation and nurture spaces that reflect these national priorities—supporting pupils proactively, reducing barriers to engagement and strengthening whole school inclusion.
