The Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract (CPA) Approach
• Understanding the role of concrete manipulatives in the secondary classroom
• Building confidence in using manipulatives across mathematical topics
• Exploring pictorial representations
• Transitioning between concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations
*Developed with ECTs in mind, but suitable for any maths teacher wanting to learn more about incorporating concrete and pictorial methods into their teaching*
Day 3 – Wednesday 17th June 2026
Focus: Inclusive Teaching & Problem Solving in Maths
Inclusive Teaching Strategies
• Adapting and responding to pupils’ needs in maths lessons
• Scaffolding learning effectively
Problem Solving and Reasoning
• Building a repertoire of problem-solving strategies
• Using mathematical talk to support reasoning and deepen understanding
