Suitable for: Heads of department, Subject Leaders, Lead teachers of English

Course code Keystages Presented by
LIT550 KS3; KS4
  • Katy McWean (Secondary English Consultant)

Course Aims:
- To consolidate English leaders' understanding of changes to the National Curriculum across the key stages, including Key Stage 2
- To support English leaders' preparation for curriculum change
- To strengthen the subject knowledge of new National Curriculum foci for explicit teaching, such as drama
- To exemplify how English leaders might review their curriculum and incorporate new elements to enhance what is already in place
- To model for English leaders how they might manage collaborative departmental planning and structured CPD over time as part of the preparation process

With the publication of a revised English National Curriculum, English leaders will be looking to review their current curriculum ahead of first teaching in 2028. This course will support English leaders with that process, looking carefully at how greater granular specificity - particularly for the teaching of spoken language, drama and grammar at key stage 3 - might be incorporated into departmental curricula and specific schedules of learning. In addition, consideration will be given to how change might be managed effectively within the department, with a focus on how CPD might be structured for training to support strengthening of subject knowledge and collaborative work on curriculum content.
