Day 1 Friday 9th October - Reading fundamentals: supporting students to be effective readers in English

• To support students to teach literary texts - with a focus on reading poetry and Shakespeare
• To support ECTs to explicitly teach vocabulary
• To support ECTs in teaching the disciplinary reading components of analysis and evaluation
• To support ECTs to develop students' independent reading of fiction and non-fiction.

The first day of this three day series will explore the foundations of effective teaching and learning in English, with a focus on the key element of reading. This course will examine research-informed practice on how practitioners can best support students' fluency, comprehension and vocabulary development, as well as support students to critically examine and evaluate literary texts. It will also provide an invaluable opportunity for English ECTs to network with colleagues. Whilst the focus of this course is on supporting ECTs, this course would be appropriate for recently qualified teachers and non-specialist English teachers.

Day 2 Wednesday 10th February - Writing fundamentals: supporting students to be effective writers in English
• To provide practical support to ECTs for the effective teaching of creative, transactional and academic writing
• To explore key research on the effective teaching of writing in English
• To clarify how to teach the writing process of planning, composing, and proofreading and editing
• To explore how the explicit teaching of structure and grammar underpins quality writing outcomes
• To provide ECTs with opportunities to network

The second day of this three-day series will build on the fundamentals of teaching reading as covered in day one of the course. The focus will thus be on best practice in teaching different forms of writing as informed by the reading of exemplar texts: writing as a reader. There will also be a particular emphasis on the overt teaching of grammar for effect. Whilst the focus of this course is on the needs of ECTs, this course would be appropriate for recently qualified teachers and non-specialist English teachers. Furthermore, colleagues who did not attend day one are welcome to attend this session.

Day 3 Wednesday 30th June - An introduction to teaching GCSE English language & GCSE literature
• To provide practical support to ECTs for the effective teaching of key components of GCSE English language and literature
• To provide ECTs with opportunities to network

The final day of this three-day series will build on the fundamentals of English teaching as covered in day one and two of the course by looking at how to best support effective reading and writing at GCSE for excellent outcomes. Sessions will focus on the different components of both GCSE English language and GCSE English literature. Whilst the focus of this course is on the needs of ECTs, this course would be appropriate for recently qualified teachers and non-specialist English teachers. Furthermore, colleagues who did not attend day one or day two are welcome to attend this session.

This course is designed for delegates to attend all three dates (bookings will need to be made separately for each date), but there is also the option to attend just one or two.
