There are many types of equipment available to help you to live as independently as possible as you get older or if you have a disability.
In Lancashire, we have introduced the use of prescriptions for some items of equipment, which gives you more choice and control over the equipment you receive.
How it works
- You will have been assessed by a health or social care professional. They will have decided you are entitled to receive equipment that will help make things easier for you and this is provided Free of Charge
- You, a relative or friend takes the prescription to an accredited retailer of your choice to get your equipment.
- You can choose to top-up or upgrade your equipment if you wish.
- You can get your equipment from any accredited retailer on the list.
Topping-up (upgrading) the equipment
If you choose to 'top-up' a piece of equipment, you will simply pay the accredited retailer the difference between the standard price and the upgraded price.
Using the equipment
The shop will show you how to use the equipment and give instructions for fitting the equipment in your home, if necessary. For certain types of equipment, your prescription may include a fitting service provided by the accredited retailer.
Delivery and fitting the equipment
You can get your equipment from any accredited retailer on the list below. If it is clear during your assessment that you are not able to go to a shop to choose your equipment and nobody else can help you, then the assessor will prescribe delivery free of charge. If you are not entitled to free delivery and you would still prefer your equipment to be delivered, you can arrange this directly with your chosen shop, but it is likely you will have to pay the accredited retailer for this.
Your relatives or carers can also collect and fit your equipment. When they visit the shop they will be given instructions for fitting the equipment in your home. They will also have to sign the prescription on your behalf.
Items that requires installation (fitting to the wall)
Many accredited retailers provide this service – please see the list for details. However if you are a resident of Blackburn and Darwen the items and installation will be provided by the local council. Call 01254 269220 for arrangements to be made.
If the assessor is making arrangements for you, then a local accredited retailer will be contacting you to arrange a suitable time and day for this work to take place.
There is an expectation that with normal appropriate use an installation should be fit for purpose for a minimum of 12 months, if the rail becomes loose within this time period please contact the accredited retailer who completed the installation.
Faulty equipment
You will need to contact the accredited retailer that you obtained it from. As with any other products that you buy, the accredited retailer will be responsible for replacing faulty items.
Change of needs or equipment wearing out
You will need to request a further assessment by phoning one of the numbers shown at the end of this leaflet. It is important you check your equipment regularly to make sure it is in good working order and meets your needs.
If equipment is no longer needed
The equipment provided on prescription belongs to you. It is not cost effective to collect, clean, store and reissue the items because of their low value. Like any other household waste, it is up to you to dispose of the equipment responsibly when you no longer need it.

You can dispose of smaller items using your local Council's normal waste collection service. They also offer a collection service for larger items, but what they collect and any charges vary from district to district. If you contact your local Council they will be able to advise you on their services and any charges - Donate the equipment to a charity
You may wish to offer your equipment to a charity. Please be aware your chosen charity may not be able to accept the equipment or collect it from your home, so you should contact them first to check.
Larger equipment not on prescription
If you are provided with a larger piece of equipment, such as a hoist or bath lift, you will not receive a prescription. Instead, the contracted provider, Medequip, will loan this type of equipment to you and it will need to be returned to them once you no longer need it.

Information sharing and consent
During the prescription process, there will be a need to share your personal and sensitive information across the relevant local authorities, NHS trusts and accredited retail shops. This will include your name, address, personal circumstances and equipment needs. This information is very important in helping to make sure that you receive the best possible service.
