School crossing patrols
School crossing patrols help children and families cross roads safely on their way to and from school.
They also help children learn how to cross roads safely through the Right Start road safety programme.
School crossing patrol times
Most school crossing patrols operate around school start and finish times, usually between:
8am and 9am
3pm and 4pm
Times vary depending on the school and crossing point.
STOP means stop
Always wait for the school crossing patrol officer to tell you when it is safe to cross.
The officer will step into the road and ask traffic to stop. Wait until the officer tells you to cross. Not every driver stops when they should.
Drivers must stop when a school crossing patrol officer tells them to do so.
How we assess crossing points
Requests for new school crossing patrol points must come from the school. If you think a new crossing point is needed, contact the school to discuss your concerns.
A local area organiser inspects each crossing point at least once a year.
We look at:
the amount of traffic
traffic speeds
the number of people crossing
other safety risks
the condition of the road and road markings
defects, such as potholes
