Improvements to the A5105 Marine Road East/Marine Drive/Coastal Road in Morecambe

We have received £920,000 from the Department for Transport's Safer Roads Fund for safety improvements to the A5105 Marine Road East/Marine Drive/Coastal Road – which connects Morecambe and Bolton-le-Sands.

We are proposing a range of measures which will encourage more people to walk and cycle by delivering dedicated infrastructure that improves safety, accessibility, and connectivity while reducing conflicts between road users.

These include:

  • Enhanced cycle measures on various sections from A6 Slyne Road to Happy Mount Park

  • Localised parking restrictions to ensure the cycle lane is kept clear and improve visibility for people crossing the road

  • Improvements to existing crossing facilities and new pedestrian crossings

  • Visual traffic calming measures with improved road markings and signs

Together, these improvements are intended to maintain visibility at crossing points, improve safety, and support the efficient movement of traffic through the surrounding road network.

The proposals would mean removing a small number of parking spaces at several points along the route. This change would help deliver wider benefits, including safer and more accessible journeys, better facilities for walking and cycling, and the continued efficient operation of the local road network.

Have your say

We are carrying out public engagement from 5 - 31 October 2026 on draft proposals, and would welcome your feedback to shape the final scheme. We will carefully consider all the feedback we receive and, where possible, use it to help shape the final designs.
