Volunteers are at the heart of many Lancashire communities. Whether supporting residents who need extra help, preserving our local heritage, organising events or caring for local environments, their contribution is invaluable.

Blackburns Farm, Fylde, PR4 2PA
Blackburns Farm Nurseries & Wildlife Centre is a community-focused conservation site in Wrea Green, dedicated to enhancing local biodiversity, supporting wildlife habitats, and promoting community wellbeing. The site includes a variety of natural features, including conservation areas, a tree nursery, and the Remembrance Woods, where over 1,000 memorial trees have been planted to create a peaceful space for reflection and remembrance.
As part of the volunteering project, volunteers will help plant new trees within the Remembrance Woods and support work in the site's polytunnel, where new raised beds are being developed to grow herbs and vegetables for donation to the local foodbank. Activities will include planting, preparing and maintaining raised beds, and general horticultural tasks that contribute to the site's conservation objectives, community food-growing efforts, and long-term environmental sustainability.
Birch Green, Skelmersdale, WN8 6JJ
The Skelmersdale event will involve working collaboratively on enhancing three key areas within the Helmsdale area of Birch Green, Skelmersdale: Westhead Clough, Helmsdale Playground, and the local community park.
Westhead Clough is a valued biological heritage site running through the heart of Birch Green. The wooded clough features mature woodland, a stream flowing through the valley, diverse wildlife habitats, and informal walking routes enjoyed by the local community.
The volunteering day will focus on improving the appearance, accessibility, and usability of these community spaces through a range of practical activities. Volunteers will take part in tasks such as litter picking, weeding, planting, general tidying, and the refurbishment of benches and railings, helping to create cleaner, safer, and more welcoming spaces for local residents and visitors. The event will hopefully strengthen community wellbeing and deepen community pride, connection and care for the Helmsdale Area.
Claver Hill Community Farm, Lancaster, LA1 3JY
Claver Hill is a community growing and environmental site dedicated to wildlife conservation, sustainable food production, and community engagement. The site includes a tree nursery, memorial planting areas, accessible nature trails, hedgerows, water channels, orchards, and growing spaces that provide valuable habitats for wildlife while supporting learning and wellbeing opportunities.
As part of the volunteering project, volunteers will help improve and maintain the site through a variety of conservation and horticultural activities. Tasks may include removing redundant tree guards, replanting the Oak Memorial Avenue, maintaining newly planted hedgerows and fruit trees through weeding and mulching, clearing vegetation from water channels, tidying the tree nursery, laying woodchip paths, and improving growing areas within the site. Volunteers may also assist with maintaining the accessible nature trail, managing perennial planting areas, erecting a new storage shed, and refreshing site signage, helping to create a welcoming and sustainable environment for both visitors and wildlife.
Rawtenstall Town Centre
A dedicated footpath was created between East Lancashire Railway Station and New Hall Hey Retail Park, providing a safe and convenient route for pedestrians. The pathway is regularly used by many residents and visitors to Rawtenstall. However, it has become overgrown and would benefit from maintenance work, including weeding, cutting back shrubs and brambles, and litter picking to improve its appearance, accessibility and overall user experience.
As part of the project, volunteers will also create a dead hedge using small branches, twigs and hedge trimmings generated during the maintenance work. This natural habitat feature will provide shelter, nesting opportunities and food sources for a variety of wildlife, including birds, insects and hedgehogs, while making sustainable use of the green waste produced on site.
