7 September 2026: Local Government Reorganisation Update
Dear colleagues,
The Government has today announced a review of its local government reorganisation programme to make sure the process is robust, legally sound and aligned with its priorities.
As part of this review, the reorganisation proposals affecting Lancashire, Blackburn with Darwen and Blackpool will be paused while further work is carried out. The Government has also confirmed that local elections in May 2027 will go ahead on existing council boundaries.
I know this announcement may raise questions. We are currently waiting for further information from the Government and will share updates as soon as we know more.
For now, there is no change to your role, the council you work for, or the services we provide to residents and communities. Please continue to focus on your important work and the support you provide to people across Lancashire every day.
While the review is taking place, councils across Lancashire will continue to work closely together. We remain committed to working in a coordinated way and making sure staff, residents and stakeholders receive clear and consistent information.
We will keep you updated as the situation develops and share further information when it becomes available. Thank you for your continued professionalism, commitment and support.
Kind regards,
Mark Wynn
