1 October 2026: Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) update following Cabinet's meeting today
Following today’s Cabinet meeting, we want to explain the latest position.
As you know, the Government has paused the LGR process and is reviewing its decision. The council has asked the Government for more information about that decision and is still waiting for a response.
To protect the council’s position while the review takes place, Cabinet has authorised protective legal steps.
This could lead to a protective legal claim which is a precautionary measure that enables the council to take further legal action in the future if necessary. This ensures that legal options remain available while the Government reviews its decision and provides further information.
Cabinet will review the position again once the Government has completed its review and provided further information.
There are no changes to council services or to your role as a result of this decision. We know the continued uncertainty may be frustrating, and we would like to thank you for your professionalism and commitment.
While we wait for a further update from Government, which we expect later in October, work on the Lancashire LGR Programme will continue ensuring we are prepared for whatever decision is made.
We are committed to keeping you informed and will continue to share updates as soon as we have more information.
