How to read the map

Gritters

  • Yellow vehicle icons represent active gritters
  • When gritters return to the depot, icons disappear – so if no gritting is taking place, you won’t see them on the map
  • Locations update every few seconds, though this may take longer in areas with weak mobile reception
  • Click an arrow to see the date and time the gritter was at that point (shown in the legend on the left)
  • Occasionally, movements may reflect driver training or vehicle maintenance, not active gritting

Check the gritting updates page for decisions on when roads will be treated.

Where we've gritted

  • As gritters travel, they leave blue arrows on the map, creating a trail of completed routes
  • Trails start in strong blue, fade to light blue over 18 hours, then disappear – showing when routes were last gritted
  • The legend on the left provides a full key
