Education of children looked after (CLA)

We work to promote the educational achievement of CLA and provide training for designated teachers, social workers and carers through the Virtual School for Children Looked After.

The Virtual School for Children Looked After

Professionals working with CLA and leaving care young people can get support and advice from the Virtual School Team.

If you are working with CLA who are at serious risk of exclusion, non-attendance or are not reaching their full educational potential we offer practical support.

This includes advice and support to help you:

  • create alternative packages of support
  • in your direct role with children and young people
  • prepare and complete the Personal Education Plan
  • with re-integration into mainstream education
  • work with other agencies
  • maintain school placements
  • with movement across local authorities

The team also supports children through personal visits to schools and colleges. We can direct and advise on activities such as sport to help motivate and re-engage hard to reach children and young people.

Personal education plans (PEP)

The revised PEP template and system comes into use from 1 September 2020 and all PEPs from the Autumn term 2020 must be completed on the new document. There are bespoke templates for each age group and an increased focus on the views of the child and young person.

Guidance on completing the new PEP is available here:

FAQ

To support education professionals and social workers in using the new Lancashire PEP template and system we have developed a FAQ spreadsheet to provide advice and guidance to help with the queries and issues that have been raised so far. We will add to this as required. Please refer to this for support for any questions or issue you have.

If you are not able to find the answer to your question on the FAQ spreadsheet education professionals can contact the Virtual School and CSC staff should contact their local PEP champion.
