Red Rose Spelling supports daily teaching with structure, progression and engaging tasks that strengthen spelling and writing outcomes.
Red Rose Spelling provides a clear, carefully sequenced approach to teaching spelling from Year 2 onwards. It sits firmly within the wider Red Rose suite of phonics and literacy programmes developed by the Primary English and Literacy Team at Lancashire Professional Development Service (LPDS). Each element of the programme has been shaped through expert input, classroom trialling and continual refinement in partnership with schools.
The spelling programmes build on secure phonic foundations established through Red Rose Letters and Sounds in Reception and Year 1. From Year 2 through to Year 4, teachers receive structured weekly planning, termly progression, high‑quality resources and practical classroom activities that support confident delivery. The programmes align with the National Curriculum and are designed to strengthen children’s understanding of spelling patterns, rules and word knowledge, while supporting strong outcomes in writing.
Schools using the Red Rose approach report high levels of pupil engagement and clear improvements in spelling and writing progress. Each package includes linked CPD, ensuring teachers feel informed, supported and ready to deliver daily spelling sessions with impact.
Red Rose Y2 Spelling Programme Package (ENG145)
This package programme is aimed primarily at schools who use the synthetic systematic phonics programme - Red Rose Letters and Sounds in Reception and Y1. Following a hugely successful roll-out of the programme in 2023-2025, the Primary English and Literacy Team at Lancashire Professional Development Service are delighted to share a comprehensive daily spelling programme based on the National Curriculum requirements for spelling in Y2. The package cost is £445 and includes CPD for one full day and two half days, and the planning programme for one delegate. This planning programme has been developed, continuously evaluated and refined, using the expertise of experts at LPDS, and feedback from Y3 practitioners in schools. The package cost is £250 and includes CPD for two half days, and the planning programme for one delegate. This package programme is aimed at schools who use the synthetic systematic phonics programme Red Rose Letters and Sounds in Reception and Y1, and the Red Rose Y2 and Y3 Spelling Programmes. The package cost is £250 and includes CPD for two half days, and the full planning programme for one delegate. SPECIAL OFFER -book before 1st September 2026 - two delegates attending for £330. The planning programme includes a yearly progression of the curriculum for Y4 spelling based on the National Curriculum, half termly overviews, planning for 3 x sessions per week, word banks, and games and activities. The programme planning also ensures an effective transition from Red Rose Y3 Spelling into Red Rose Y4 Spelling. The planning programme will be provided each term for delegates across the year, in conjunction with the CPD days.
