PIVATS and the Engagement Model

Since September 2021, schools have been required to use the Engagement Model to assess pupils working below subject-specific study. If pupils are at the end of Key Stage 2, schools will have to report children who are assessed against this.

The Engagement Model is designed to assess children who are working below the national curriculum and who are not engaged in subject specific study. The model has five areas: exploration, realisation, anticipation, persistence and initiation. Schools can use the engagement model across all key stages, including secondary school, as the principles are the same for all ages.

Regarding the Engagement Model, p.5 of the DFE guidance states, "It will not necessarily replace a school’s existing plans, assessments and reporting systems, but adds value to them by helping schools assess pupils’ progress from a different angle."

PIVATS can still be used as a formative assessment tool and an 'in school' summative resource that supports schools in celebrating small steps of progress and identifying the next areas to develop with a pupil. However, if children are working below the national curriculum and not engaged in subject specific study, the Engagement Model should also be used.
