Vocabulary - Supporting vocabulary development to close the word gap

Who is this course for?

All practitioners wishing to develop children's vocabulary

This session is recommended for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award Communication and Language.

Course content

The word gap is impacting on children's learning and development. This is worrying given the fact that children need good language skills to be able to learn to read, to do well in school, to make friends and manage their behaviour.

Settings are required to support the development of children's vocabulary; this can be extended through having a sound knowledge of how communication and language develops.

This session will focus on understanding what the word gap is and the impact this can have on children's development, knowing how vocabulary can be developed through understanding the sequence of learning for communication and language and promoting the teaching of new vocabulary using a variety of strategies which include talking, singing, reading and playing.
