Course content

Physical development is a prime area because it underpins learning across all areas of the curriculum and is fundamental to children developing healthy bodies and minds. The course will examine the importance of physical development as a prime area and its connection with the other prime areas. We will consider the range of opportunities children need to support their physical development and give ideas of how to provide an enabling environment to support physical growth and development for children aged birth to three.

With a balance of both theory and suggested activities we will consider what curriculum we need to provide for our children in terms of physical development and how to ensure a broad range of gross and fine motor physical experiences are catered for in your indoor and outdoor learning environments.

Healthy lifestyles should be promoted with children and parents as obesity is rising. The rising level of childhood obesity has physical, mental/emotional and social consequences in the short and long term. We will explore the latest research and guidance materials available to support you and how these can be reflected in practice.
