Once upon a mathematical story – Promoting maths through stories for three to fives

Who is this course for?

This workshop is for practitioners working with children aged 3 -5 years of age.

This session is essential for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Mathematics in the Early Years.

Course content

Stories are a great way to hook children when teaching maths and can often make concepts more accessible and enjoyable for learners

This training session will explore the benefits of teaching maths through stories and offer practical ideas to use storytelling as a springboard for meaningful mathematical learning.

Practitioners will be introduced to a wide range of exciting mathematical stories and picture books to support the introduction and consolidation of mathematical concepts, fostering positive attitudes and dispositions towards maths and developing problem-solving and reasoning skills that all young mathematicians need to succeed.

A key focus of the session will also be the role of the adult in promoting mathematical language and ways to use the power of picture books to introduce and model vocabulary in a meaningful context.
