Maths through continuous provision for three to five year olds
Who is this course for?
This training is for practitioners working with children aged 3 -5 years of age.
This session is essential for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Mathematics in the Early Years.
Course content
'It is important that children develop positive attitudes and interests in Mathematics' (Revised Educational Programme for Mathematics, Statutory Requirements for the EYFS 2021)
This practical session will support practitioners to make maths memorable and meaningful for pre-school and reception aged children. Different stages of children's mathematical mark-making will be explored and ideas shared to promote children to represent their own mathematical thinking.
The indoor learning environment will be considered as a backdrop for promoting children's mathematical knowledge and understanding. The session will support practitioners to harness purposeful mathematical opportunities available within areas of continuous provision and daily routines.
Practitioners will have the opportunity to tour the mathematical learning environments at the EYPDC to support reflection and evaluation of their own setting's provision.
Training aims:
- To explore opportunities for promoting mathematics throughout areas of continuous provision and daily routines
- To explore the role of the adult and effective teaching strategies to support and extend children’s mathematical development.
- To explore the different stages mathematical mark-making and encourage children to represent and value their own mathematical thinking
