Who is this course for?
This training is for practitioners working with children aged 3 - 5 years of age.
This session is essential for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Mathematics in the Early Years.
Course content
Let’s not forget about shape, space and measure.
"It is important that the curriculum includes rich opportunities for children
to develop their spatial reasoning skills across all areas
of mathematics including shape, space and Measures".
(Revised Educational Programme for Mathematics, Statutory Requirements for the EYFS 2021)
This training session will support practitioners to open children's eyes to shapes, spatial relationships and measurement through purposeful and meaningful learning opportunities. Building knowledge of these key concepts through manipulation, exploration and conversation!
The session will unpick child development for each key concept, supporting practitioner's knowledge of progression across the 3 to 5 age phase. Mathematical language will also be explored through the effective role of the adult, sharing practical ideas of how to promote and model essential vocabulary.
Training aims:
- To gain an understanding of children’s development of mathematical concepts linked to space, shape and measure
- To explore the role of the adult in promoting mathematical language and ways to introduce and model essential vocabulary
- To provide a wealth of new ideas for teaching shape, space and measure in meaningful and purposeful contexts
