Developing early number for 3-5 year olds

Who is this course for?

This training is for practitioners working with children aged 3 -5 years of age.

This session is essential for those settings undertaking the Lancashire Quality Award – Mathematics in the Early Years.

Course content

This session will support practitioners to teach children the key skills required for learning and development within number, including the 5 principles of counting. Practitioners will explore how children's steps in learning within number concepts develop and how an effective adult role can further support mathematics through small group activities and in the meaningful context of continuous provision.

Training aims:

  • To gain an understanding of children’s development of mathematical concepts linked to counting and number
  • To explore the effective role of the adult within small group activities and when planning challenge opportunities throughout continuous provision
  • To provide a wealth of new ideas for teaching number and counting concepts in meaningful and purposeful contexts
