Planning for your Early Years Children

Who is this course for?

We have written this session with Childminder’s in mind! The EYFS is delivered to children in all types of settings, however we invite Childminder’s and their assistants along to this session as the structure of the session and examples will be based on a Childminder setting.

Course content

There have been lots of changes around how and what we should teach children in our settings recently, often it can leave us feeling overwhelmed. Knowing how to plan a child’s curriculum is a crucial aspect of your role and having an effective system in place to do this can make the load feel much lighter!

Planning does not and should not mean endless paperwork and mountains of formal observation, what it should mean is knowing when and what to tune into, making a mental or short written ‘note’ and considering what you might add to your children’s existing knowledge to strengthen and broaden their curriculum.

When you come away from this session our aim is to ensure you walk away

  • more inspired and less bogged down at the thought of the observation, assessment, and planning process • inspired to try new approaches to planning for your children
  • with a better understanding of why planning and summative/formative assessments can be beneficial to children’s overall learning and development
  • with a clear plan on how you want to plan for your children and how this is relevant to each one of them

We will share with you some of the work by ‘Birth to Five matters’ and ‘Development Matters’ and this will inform parts of our session whilst we look at the observation, assessment, and planning process. We will look at these models and apply them to everyday practice. The session will have practical aspects in which we try out some of the methods of planning that we discuss in the session.
